SCARY

SCARY

Opps! sorry were you expecting to see dinosaurs, so why SCARY? well the only thing scary about trees is maybe learning scientific names, these tell a story about the tree, one example I always use is the Douglas Fir it was discovered by David Douglas it's scientific name is Pseudotsuga Menziesii. So let’s break it down, the first part is Pseudo which means 'false' the second part Tsuga is the Hemlock tree, Archibald Menzies first introduced this tree into cultivation from the wild, so there is the story, a fir tree discovered by David Douglas that looks like a Hemlock and made available by Archibald Menzies, easy, not scary. This website also aims to put the case for the tree which should be a lead topic taught in schools because of its importance in all our lives, but trees get a poor press or hardly any, why? Dinosaurs are SCARY, fearsome, large teeth, scaly skin and roar so they make a good subject to the various media. But trees just stand there silent, motionless uumm that won’t make a good movie or TV programme, but they are silent sentinels providing use with the most important thing of all, oxygen. There has been a preoccupation with dinosaurs ever since Jurassic Park and CGI, there's no end of opportunity by film and TV create them. Experts and academics will say dinosaurs were the most successful species of all, wrong! That fact belongs to plants and trees in particular. Have a look at this graphic HERE Trees where here 110 million years before dinosaurs which died out 65 million years ago as a result of the Chicxulub extinction event and they are not coming back anytime soon trees are still here! the most successfull species of all time? Yes. Yes there is a need to study palaeontology but there is an even greater need to teach about trees or awareness in schools. It’s seems bizarre to say that when trees are everywhere their influence starts as the day starts we get out of bed, made of wood, stand on the floor, made of wood, open the door, made of wood, go down stairs, made of wood, and on it goes, am I giving you a clue?
